Despite all the warnings from Beijing, Taiwan’s Vice President William Lai insisted on making stopovers in the US both on his way to Paraguay and on his way home. Lai did not meet with senior US officials, but the Chinese government was rejected. Military exercises began around Taiwan on Saturday.
“This is a serious warning to the Taiwanese separatists who conspire with outside forces to provoke,” the military agency said in a statement. Joint naval and air combat patrols are being conducted around the island, aimed at coordinating ships and aircraft and controlling of attacks.
Taiwan strongly condemns the exercise
Taiwan’s defense ministry has strongly condemned Chinese military exercises near the island. “The start of military exercises does not contribute to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” the ministry said in a statement on Saturday. Appropriate forces will be deployed to respond. We have the ability, determination and confidence to ensure national security.
The Taiwanese vice president also tweeted about his layovers:
Only in April did a US visit by Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen raise tensions. China also responded with military maneuvers around Taiwan at the time. Presidential elections will be held in Taiwan in January. Lai wants to succeed Tsai. He is currently leading in most polls.
