It should have been a nice climb with fantastic weather in the Tiroler Kaisertal. However, it ended with a drama for three men (48, 46 and 45 years old) from Germany. Just 45 minutes after takeoff, they were hit by several boulders. Only one of the alpinists was lucky.
The trio started the climbing route “Via Aqua” in the Kaisertal around 6.30 am. Shortly afterwards – at 7:15 am – the momentous accident happened. “A rock eruption occurred about 60 meters above the climbers,” police said. The officials report that “several chunks, some the size of a football,” fell on the men.

Both the 48-year-old and 45-year-old were hit by the boulders and were seriously injured. Only the 46-year-old was lucky, who escaped without injury. The two climbers were rescued by the helicopter with the rope and flown to Kufstein Hospital after first aid from the emergency doctor.
