While attempting to climb the Pichlweg on the south side of the Dachstein, a Hungarian climber was hit by a rock on Saturday evening. Shortly afterwards, it also crashed in the twilight and the storm front was approaching.
Two Hungarian mountaineers (43, 51) left far too late on Saturday to climb the so-called Pichlweg through the eastern part of the Dachstein South Face. They also got lost halfway along the route. As if that wasn’t enough, the 43-year-old leader was hit in the head by a falling rock around 8 p.m., which gave him a concussion. Despite feeling dizzy, he tried to keep climbing!
Spectacular rescue at a late hour
But he was no longer able to overcome the difficulty of the rock, slipped and fell. As a result, the Hungarian also injured his ankle. It was now finally out of the question to climb further, and time was running out quickly. The duo therefore made an emergency call.
The Ramsau mountain rescue service, an alpine police officer and the crew of the rescue helicopter C 14 were deployed. “The rescue was carried out with the help of a 90-metre rope. We were under great time pressure because it was already getting dark and a storm front was approaching,” says air rescuer Albert Prugger in an interview with the “Krone”. Eventually, the injured man was flown to the Schladming hospital and his comrade was brought safely to the valley.
