The Russian army has withdrawn from its positions near Kharkovrefuses to attack Ukraine’s second largest city but continues to try to enter Donbas from the north, albeit with little success so far.

“In Kharkov, the enemy has not taken active military actions. He has focused his efforts on… ensure the withdrawal of his troops of the city, maintaining (…) supply lines,” the General Staff of the Ukrainian Army reported.

This region, bordering Russia, has in recent days become the symbol of the Ukrainian counter-offensivewhose aim is to liberate not only Kharkov, but the entire area to prevent the encirclement of his forces in northern Donetsk.

“The gradual liberation of the Kharkov . region show that we will not leave anyone in the hands of the enemy,” said Volodímir Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, in his traditional evening speech.

According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the reason for the Russian withdrawal is both the Ukrainian counter-offensive and the limited ability to receive reinforcements from the Russian side.

“Ukraine appears to have won the battle of Kharkiv. Ukrainian troops prevented Russian troops from encircling, let alone taking Kharkiv, and then They expelled them from the outskirts of the city like they did when the Russians tried to take Kiev,” he says.

For its part, the Russian Defense Ministry today released some images showing members of the airborne troops taking part in an offensive, but without specifying the areas where it takes place.

In the past week, Russian troops have made “little progress” in their attempt to attack the main Ukrainian square in Donetsk, Kramatorsk, according to the ISW.
