Shocking moment for four mountain rescuers in St. Anton am Arlberg! While on tour together, a 21-year-old suddenly caused an avalanche on Saturday. The young man was lucky and was not buried. However, he had to be taken to hospital with injuries.
The four friends left the Rendl ski area towards Darmstädter Hütte and further towards the eastern gorge of the Scheibler. From there the group moved north. “After just a few turns, a 21-year-old Austrian caused a slab avalanche about 150 meters wide, which dragged him about 200 meters away,” police said.
Recovered by police helicopter
When the avalanche stopped, the local man was on the snow surface and thus not buried. However, he suffered significant injuries. His three friends were not affected by the avalanche and immediately called 911. The 21-year-old was rescued by the police helicopter and flown into the valley. The three uninjured mountain rescuers were able to descend to the valley independently.
Cases due to changing snow conditions
In the early morning hours, a 50-year-old Austrian woman in Stummerberg climbed with her touring skis from the Teifentalalm to the 1,998 meter high Heutaljoch together with five other alpinists. After the six winter sports enthusiasts had reached the top, the group drove towards “Hemerergrund”. “The 50-year-old fell due to changing snow conditions and was seriously injured,” police said. The woman was rescued by an emergency helicopter and flown to the district hospital in Schwaz. The remaining group members continued their tour.
