The planned delivery of Western F-16 fighter jets is likely to take months, but training of Ukrainian pilots has already begun, according to information from Kiev. “The training has already started,” Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov told TV channel 24 Kanal on Saturday.
Resnikov did not name the training location for strategic reasons. Denmark and the Netherlands had agreed a few days ago to supply the American fighter jets. However, this also requires the approval of the government in Washington. The US government said on Thursday that it wanted to enable Denmark and the Netherlands to transfer the F-16 quickly. However, it still has to take several months before the aircraft can actually be delivered.
Jet fighter coalition led by the Netherlands and Denmark
A coalition led by Denmark and the Netherlands formed this summer in NATO to train Ukrainian pilots for the use of the F-16. The US also agreed. At the time it was said that aircraft could later also be sold from stock in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark or Norway.
Drone attacks on Kursk and Moscow
For the time being, the Ukrainian armed forces are mainly dependent on artillery and the use of drones to attack supply routes and important infrastructure, including on Russian territory. According to Russian information, there was an attack with unmanned aerial vehicles on the western Russian city of Kursk on Sunday morning. According to preliminary information, a drone fell on the roof of a station building, Governor Roman Starowoit reports on Telegram. The roof caught fire.
Five people were slightly injured by glass splinters in the incident, emergency services are on the scene. At first there were no further details. The information could not be independently verified. Kursk is the capital of the border area of the same name with Ukraine. The city is located more than 500 kilometers south of Moscow.
According to official information, the Russian capital claims to have repelled another drone attack. During the night there was an attempt to fly a drone over Moscow from the south, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram early Sunday. The air defense thwarted this. This, too, could not be independently verified.
Moscow’s two airports, Vnukovo and Domodedovo, temporarily suspended takeoffs and landings on Sunday night. However, the country’s authorities gave no reason for the suspension of flight operations.
