Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that the Netherlands and Denmark will supply F-16 fighter jets. He announced, “And this is just the beginning!” According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine should get 42 jets to defend its airspace – which would correspond to the entire contingent of the Netherlands.
The Ukrainian president arrived in the Netherlands on Sunday. “To protect our people from Russian terror,” Zelenskyy told the Telegram news channel. “We’re getting stronger,” he said. The fighter jets will be delivered as soon as Ukrainian troops have completed their training on the machine, Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced at an airbase in Eindhoven. “The Netherlands and Denmark commit to handing over F-16s to Ukraine as soon as the conditions for such transfer are met.”
The training is expected to be completed in early 2024. The United States on Friday gave the green light for Denmark and the Netherlands to send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. Unlike Zelenskyj, Rutte did not mention a specific number that should be supplied. His country owns 42 aircraft of this type.
The talks also include preparing for a peace summit and bringing the “terrorist state” to justice, said Zelensky, who was traveling with his wife. The criminal court in The Hague had issued an arrest warrant for war crimes against Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, who ordered the February 24, 2022 attack on Ukraine.
Successful visit to Sweden
Selenskyj reached an agreement with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on further military cooperation in the Swedish capital Stockholm on Saturday. He announced on Sunday that he will “hold talks with other countries that support us so that they can provide us with the necessary equipment to win this war”.
Do Belgium and Norway also deliver?
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had previously announced that she would visit Skrydstrup Air Base this Sunday, along with Defense Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen and Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
The Danish F-16s are stationed there. A coalition led by the two countries formed within NATO over the summer to train Ukrainian pilots to use the F-16. Belgium and Norway are also considered possible suppliers of the American jets.
