Tens of thousands evacuated – heat, drought, wildfires around the world

Date:

The heat wave is causing dramatic scenes in many parts of the world. The flames are currently particularly fierce in Canada, Tenerife and Greece.

Scorching heat, stifling air, drought and blaring fire sirens. Two weeks after the devastating wildfires in Hawaii that left 114 dead, fires in many places are keeping tens of thousands of people on edge. For example, the fire still flared up on Sunday on the Canary Island of Tenerife, in Greece and in many provinces in Canada.

11,600 hectares of forest in Tenerife destroyed
In Tenerife, the flames have already covered 11,600 hectares of nature. This corresponds to the surface of almost 16,000 football fields. More than 12,000 people had to be brought to safety. Normalcy still prevails in tourist areas.

30,000 Canadians on the run
In Canada, the flames have already destroyed 52,000 hectares of forest. 30,000 people are on the run. No fatalities have been reported so far. But thousands of homes were destroyed by the fires.

A fierce forest fire is also raging in the northeast of Greece. After several villages near the port city of Alexandroupoli were evacuated on Saturday, the flames spread further on Sunday, the authorities said. Across Greece, firefighters battled a total of 53 fires on Sunday.

Austria is also hit by a heat wave coming from Africa. A current heat warning from GeoSphere Austria is still valid.
