Shortly before a joint maneuver with the United States, South Korea reported an attack by North Korean hackers on the infrastructure of the large-scale exercise. The hackers, believed to be linked to North Korea’s Kimsuky group, carried out “malicious email attacks” on South Korean contractors working at the Allied Joint War Simulation Center, police in Gyeonggi Nambu province said.
The investigations had confirmed “that a North Korean hacker group was responsible for the attack”. However, no military information was stolen.
A joint investigation by the South Korean police and the US military found that the IP address used in the most recent attack matched an IP address used in a 2014 cyberattack against a South Korean nuclear operator for which the Hacker group Kimsuky was held responsible, the statement said. .
Connections to the Kim regime
The US Cybersecurity Agency concluded in 2020 that Kimsuky was “most likely tasked by the North Korean regime with a global intelligence mission”. The group targets individuals and organizations in South Korea, Japan and the US for data on foreign policy and national security issues related to the Korean peninsula, nuclear policy and sanctions.
The large-scale exercise “Ulchi Freedom Shield”, which is scheduled to last until August 31, starts today, Monday. Pyongyang strongly condemns the regular maneuvers of the two allies as preparations for a supposed invasion.
