A 31-year-old Austrian alpinist who was mountaineering with a 35-year-old South Tyrolean on the Marmolada massif in Trentino, northern Italy, had to be rescued by helicopter. The two climbers were on the southern face of the Marmolada on Sunday when they disembarked about 100 meters below the top of the route, according to the daily “Alto Adige”.
The two unsuccessfully tried to find their way back to the route and called when it got dark. A helicopter took off and the emergency services searched for the climbers with searchlights and night vision goggles.
Fly back safely
During a rescue operation, in which a 100-meter cable winch was used, the rescuers managed to free the two men from their plight. The Italian and Austrian were flown safely back down the valley to Canazei and the rescue operation was completed at around 10:30 pm.
