On the Danube, on Lake Wolfgang and now also in Litzlberg on Lake Attersee: bathing fun can quickly become dangerous. If you’re not careful, you float up the water. If you can’t swim, your bath day will be a nightmare. A 12-year-old girl was lucky when she was swimming in the Attersee.
Water rescue, fire, police and Red Cross: The full program was in operation when a 12-year-old girl went missing for over an hour on the afternoon of August 20. The 12-year-old had gone swimming with an inflatable doughnut-shaped swimming ring in the Litzlberg outdoor swimming pool on Lake Attersee and was probably driven off by the current. After their parents lost sight of them, they immediately raised the alarm.
Search was soon over
Shortly after the search began, the donut was seen floating some 50 meters offshore, with the girl still sitting on it. It was returned to shore unharmed. According to Alexander Leitner, local manager of the Litzlberg water rescue service, the girl was not particularly frightened: “The incident was not even registered as an emergency.”
Carelessness is often fatal
It is the second person survey of this kind this year, although such incidents are avoidable, according to Leitner. As a parent, you should always maintain eye contact with the child, even brief moments of inattention can have fatal consequences. It is also helpful to demarcate an area where the children are allowed to move. Last but not least, if you can’t swim, you must wear a life jacket, even with air mattresses and the like.
In case of emergency, you can make an emergency call
“If you miss someone, it’s always good to make an emergency call,” explains the local manager. As a parent, it’s important to act quickly or things could go horribly wrong.
