Death of migrants charred by forest fire in Greece

The Greek government has confirmed the deaths of 18 of them. The NGO Alarm Phone has warned that another 250 migrants have been surrounded by fire on two islands in the Evros River, on the border between Turkey and Greece.

Shortly after this discovery, the rescue teams found another group of eight deceased people in the same area, and hours before they also found the human remains of a burned person. Minister Kairides has not commented on these corpses, although authorities suspect they may also be migrants.

In addition, the death of a farmer who tried to save his animals from the flames has also been announced, so the fatalities since last Saturday now amounts to 28.

Added to all this the alert launched by the NGO Alarm Phone, which receives warning calls from migrants in danger in the Mediterranean Sea, on the social network X – formerly Twitter. In Greece, at least eight major fires are raging in different parts of the country, the most serious being the one that started on Saturday near the Greek port city of Alexandroupolis, where they had to evacuate their main hospital due to the proximity of the flames. . The Dadia Forest is located north of that city and is a common transit area for migrants coming to Greece from Turkey. The Greek authorities therefore fear that the number of people killed in the forest will increase in the coming days.
