A plane crash between Moscow and Saint Petersburg is said to have claimed ten lives. It is reported on social media that the head of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was said to have been on board.
Citing the flight authority, it was said that Prigozhin was on the passenger list. It would have been a private jet from the Brazilian manufacturer Embraer. According to the Ministry of Disaster Management, seven passengers and three crew members were killed. The crash took place in the Tver region, north of the Russian capital.
It has also not yet been confirmed whether Prigozhin was actually on board. Four bodies were reportedly found.
Videos of the alleged crash site, showing the burning wreckage, are circulating on social media – but there is still no confirmation that these are actually from the current incident.
Prigozhin fell out of favor with Russian President Vladimir Putin when he organized a march of his mercenaries on Moscow in June. Soon after, it was speculated that the mercenary boss would not have long to live.
