“Provide protection” – New night shelters for women after homeless murders

Date:

Against the background of the deadly attacks on the homeless, the Vienna Social Fund (FSW) opened a night shelter for women in the Favorita building complex on Wednesday. In the hours from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., a maximum of twenty clients must “get through the night safely,” according to a broadcast. The FSW confirmed that the currently vacant premises of the winter package of the Viennese homeless assistance were being renovated.

The advantage of the offer, which is aimed specifically at women, is that “places can potentially be increased,” FSW spokeswoman Julia Riedler told the APA. “We still have some leeway here.” Subsequently, the utilization of the quarter is evaluated for possible expansion possibilities.

The sleeping places have increased further
According to the FSW, places for 50 people have been offered at the same time in the Obdach Josi day center, as well as places for 40 people in night shelters by FSW partner organizations. Together with the 20 places for women in the Favorita shelter, an additional 110 places are now available at night – as part of an emergency package due to the previous knife attacks on the homeless. In addition, there are 6,800 places for the homeless and 160 places in emergency shelters for particularly vulnerable people in the regular operation of the Viennese homeless shelter all year round, which also remain open all year round.

“The proportion of homeless women in the newly established shelters has increased day by day. Women often live secretly homeless or homeless. That is why we now need our own offer to specifically reach the group of female homeless people and offer them protection in this exceptional situation,” emphasizes Markus Hollendohner, head of the Vienna Homeless Aid at the FSW. “There are also shower facilities here, as well as a hot dinner and breakfast for the users,” says Barbara Trsek, divisional manager of FSW Obdach. During the day, users have the opportunity to visit the Obdach Ester day center, which also specializes in women, according to a broadcast.

Vienna hunts homeless killers
Three brutal attacks on homeless people took place in Vienna this summer, two of which ended in the deaths of the victims. On July 12, a man was found stabbed to death on a park bench on Handelskai in Vienna-Brigittenau. In Vienna-Leopoldstadt, more than a week later, a woman was seriously injured by stitches and lacerations. Most recently, on the night of August 9, a knife attack occurred in Vienna-Josefstadt in which the man succumbed to his injuries. Due to the similar injury patterns, crime periods and the group of victims, the Landsrecherche (LKA) assumes that there is a connection between the attacks and the perpetrators.
