But the wind dies down: the forest fires in Greece are spreading quickly

Date:

Smaller and larger wildfires and forest fires raged in different regions of Greece on Thursday morning. The country is currently being hit by its second wave of wildfires in a month. In addition to heat and drought, strong winds also make life difficult for firefighters. Because the fires are spreading at breakneck speed. But there is hope, because the wind gusts are finally abating.

People are also bothered by the pungent smell of burnt wood that hangs over the city of Athens and countless other regions. ‘Stay at home with the windows closed’, civil defense advises time and time again. The recommendation is especially true for children, the elderly and people with heart and lung problems.

More than sixty new fires have been counted in the past 48 hours alone, including two near the capital Athens. The region of the port city of Alexandroupoli, located in the northeast, not far from the border with Turkey, is particularly affected.

Also burning near the Turkish border
Larger fires are also raging in central Greece near the village of Distomo and for the sixth day in a row on the Greek-Turkish border around the major port city of Alexandroupolis. There it burns over a distance of about 40 kilometers. The fires reached the region of the western city of Komotini.

Meteorologists continue to forecast hot and dry weather through Friday, meaning the risk of fire could last at least through the end of the week. Firefighters from many EU countries are taking part in the extinguishing work.
