A brutal attack on two Ukrainian women has sparked outrage in the Czech Republic. First, both were asked about their origins at a fair, after which three men beat them up. The children of the two had to watch the incredible act.
The 48-year-old suspected main perpetrator must now be taken into custody, almost two weeks after the act in Pilsen, Czech Republic, the police said. He is charged with assault and disturbance of public order. The search for the two alleged accomplices continues.
The woman suffered a broken jaw and nose
According to media reports, the two Ukrainians and their children attended a fair in Plasy, about 20 kilometers north of Pilsen. As they sat on the side of the road, a man reportedly got out of his car and asked if they were from Ukraine. He and two other men then allegedly beat the women. One of them suffered a broken jaw and nose.
Politicians are shocked
Czech Human Rights Commissioner Klara Simackova-Laurencikova said it is “absolutely unacceptable” for someone to be attacked just because of their nationality. “I wish the women a speedy recovery and their children who had to witness the attack a lot of strength,” she wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter). Interior Minister Vit Rakusan stressed that the police do not tolerate hate speech or hate crimes.
The Czech Republic has provided temporary shelter to more than half a million Ukrainians since the start of the Russian war of aggression. According to the Ministry of the Interior in Prague, about 325,000 of these refugees are still in the EU member state. Recently, the country had about 10.5 million inhabitants.
