Violence against the homeless is on the rise: in Vienna a ghost is busy with his deadly nuisance, and in Kapfenberg a woman living on the street was brutally attacked. How do homeless people deal with this threat? To what extent is the demand for help with homelessness increasing? asked the “Krone”.
There have been three brutal attacks on homeless people in Vienna since July. Two of the victims did not survive and the search for the perpetrator is still ongoing. And Kapfenberg was also in the news recently after youths there nearly beat a homeless woman to death – they are currently on trial on suspicion of murder.
‘Always associated with fear’
What does such headlines do to people who are themselves homeless? “My life on the street was always associated with fear,” says Gregor Weiss during the meeting with the “Krone” in VinziDorf in Graz. For twenty years he lived on the streets as a homeless person before the recently deceased priest for the poor, Wolfgang Pucher, offered him a home.
