“Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.” With these words, Captain Picard in “Star Trek” threw on the replicator – and food vending machines, just like in the science fiction movie, are getting closer. An early representative of this genus comes from the Chinese tech group Xiaomi, whose Smart Cooking Robot is not yet self-sufficient and cooks directly like a replicator, but automates everything and has to relieve people. In theory. In practice, we first went to bed hungry…
At least on the first night with the Xiaomi cooking robot, simply because we underestimated how much effort it takes to set up the intelligent food processor with tablet control panel, chopping, steaming, stirring and cooking functions. First she needs to connect to the WLAN at home, which requires a Xiaomi app available for iOS and Android phones. The app is sensibly made and also (reluctantly) connects the cooking robot to the home WLAN, but Xiaomi apparently only built a 2.4 gigahertz radio into the robot. That means: low data rate to the router, the update required on first turn on takes over two hours to download an interactive cookbook with over a hundred recipes to the apparently Android-powered tablet as the brains of the food processor. The next day we go looking for tasty recipes.
