The severe forest fires in Greece just don’t want to end. The emergency services can’t get them under control. And immediately the following bad news follows: Monday the wind is expected to change and the flames will spread even further.
The large forest fires in the Dadia forest area near the Greek-Turkish border raged for the ninth day in a row on Sunday. The situation is very difficult, said the deputy governor of the region, Dimitris Petrovich, at the ERT station in the morning. “Unfortunately, we do not see the front being able to be contained and brought under control,” he admitted.
The area’s forests have never been cut down — it’s “virgin forest” that has been intentionally left natural, Petrovich said. However, this now makes extinguishing work a lot more difficult. Everything will be tried and reinforcement of the emergency services has also been requested again.
Wildfires and forest fires also continued to burn in other parts of the country. However, most of the fires were contained over the weekend, including in northwest Athens and on the islands of Andros and Euboea. According to the Greek civil protection, the risk of forest fires has decreased overall compared to last week.
