The trend towards self-sufficiency has also spread to breakfast eggs: the number of hobby chicken farmers is steadily increasing. A chicken in your own garden is practical – but not allowed everywhere. And: Each animal also has its own personality. Does the plumage lure you too? We show you what to look out for!
A few years ago, Inge and Klaus discovered their love for the country and moved from the city to Lower Austria. Here they are happy with their dogs, with a large garden and vegetable gardens, they make their own jam, juice, etc. And: The couple has now also got chickens. The Feathered Ladies and Gentlemen are rescued animals, once discarded by an egg company. With Inge and Klaus they can live until the end, in a meadow with a professional chicken coop, even though they no longer lay eggs.
Every animal here has its name, from Agatha to Fridolina and Calimero, and the couple knows each animal’s characteristics and habits. “For us they are now part of it, without it we would miss something,” says Inge. “It’s not just about knowing where the egg comes from, you never get bored with the chickens either. Everyone has their own personality. And the roosters in any case.” And just like Inge and Klaus, more and more Austrians are discovering their love for poultry.
