Flood alert – Upper Austria: The first clean-up work has started

Date:

Looks like we’ve been taken lightly. The level of the Inn is falling, that of the Danube is still rising, but it shouldn’t be that bad. In Schärding, the dismantling of the dams has already started. Ideally, the situation calms down during the day, but it remains vague.

As predicted, the inn in Schärding reached a water level of about 680 centimeters during the night. “The fire brigade was up all night taking further protective measures, collecting sandbags from the cross-border sandbag depot and replenishing the stock with the help of the fire brigades of the municipalities of Brunnenthal, St. Florian Neuhaus and Schärding. right away,” he says Marie Sophie Gahler, Officer on duty at the Upper Austrian regional fire command.

After the wave has moved towards the mouth of the Danube and passed the crest, it is now being cleared, dismantled and the locks are lifted again.

Everything clear in the Innviertel
The situation has eased throughout the Innviertel and currently only two alarms remain in effect due to flooding throughout Upper Austria.

Civil defense alert at 3am
Not only the Innviertel was affected by the water masses. In the district of Perg, the civil defense alert was activated by the state alert center in Saxen and Reitberg at around 3 a.m., as the water level at the Dornach pumping station rose rapidly. In Mauthausen the warning limit of the Danube level was reached and exceeded.

Linz is also prepared
The state capital has also prepared for a possible flood. Flood protection was put in place, but the closure of the Urfahraner fairground was lifted again.

For the fire service, however, this does not mean the end of the work, on the contrary, says firefighter Gahler. Even if the water level drops again, they are required to carry out statewide cleanups to remove the marks left by the storm and the flooding.
