20% less than 2022 – Fewer migrants crossing the English Channel

Date:

Fewer migrants than in 2022 have illegally crossed the English Channel to Britain this year. Some 20,100 people have so far reached the southern English coast, the PA news agency reported Wednesday, citing data from the British Home Office. That is about 20 percent less than the 25,000 in the same period last year. About 300 migrants arrived on Tuesday.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had announced that he would “stop the boats”. The falling number of arrivals shows that his plan to deter migrants with strict laws is working, the conservative head of government recently claimed. Anyone entering Britain ‘illegally’ should be detained and deported as soon as possible – regardless of their circumstances and with no chance of ever being granted asylum in Britain.

Bad weather is likely responsible for the decline
Experts, on the other hand, point out that the weather on the English Channel was worse this year and fewer people risked the risky crossing from France as a result. Amnesty International’s British chief, Sacha Deshmukh, said: “This is another reminder that the government’s failed immigration policy is not stopping people from making dangerous journeys to seek asylum.”

Tighter regulation of immigration to Britain was a major promise of Brexit. Since then, however, more and more people have entered the country illegally. This is partly because there is no longer a readmission agreement with an EU country.
