The first estimates after the devastating floods at the beginning of August are available: the insurance companies expect a maximum of 80 million euros to be paid out. The province of Styria also digs deep into the wallet.
Between 70 and 80 million euros: Gunther Riedlsperger, chairman of the Styrian insurance brokers, estimates the damage caused by extreme weather in Styria since mid-July. 25,000 notifications have been received! Flooding in particular, but also hail and landslides caused the destruction of buildings, facilities and cars.
However, this only applies to damage covered by the insurance. So the total will be significantly higher!
Almost ten million euros for emergency measures
The state of Styria also has to dig deep into its pockets: the government has released 9.8 million euros for priority 1 measures. These are contracts that can be placed with regional companies quickly and without an award procedure in the event of a calamity, for example for the dredging of a fully-fledged retention basin. There were 232 such cases in the districts of Southeast Styria, Leibnitz and Deutschlandsberg.
Individual damage cases could now be added due to the rain on Tuesday and Wednesday. “Such amounts were rare,” says Harald Eitner, director of disaster management. The highest value was recorded after the devastating mudslide in St. Lorenzen in Paltental in 2012 with more than 30 million euros.
Millions of damage also to roads
The cabinet is releasing another 2.3 million euros for cleaning and renovation work (priority 2 measures). According to traffic police officer Anton Lang (SPÖ), the damage on national roads alone amounts to six million euros, while a similarly high amount is added on municipal roads.
