The Vespa velutina, a species from Asia, should soon fly over the Hungarian border and make Burgenland unsafe. The predatory insect can kill up to 80 bees per day. But what can be done against the possible invasion of hornets?
Maks Grgic from St. Andrä am Zicksee, who has been running a beekeeping business with around 200 hives for ten years, is very concerned about his bee colonies. Because the menacing Asian hornet has already been spotted in Mosonmagyaróvár, Hungary – from there to the border crossing at Nickelsdorf it is only a mere 17.03 kilometers as the crow flies, and St. Andrä is only a stone’s throw away. “It’s probably only a matter of time before she joins us,” says the beekeeper.
