The Ukrainian army has made “significant progress” in its counter-offensive in the southern region of Zaporizhia in the past 72 hours, according to the US government. That’s what John Kirby, the communications director of the National Security Council, said in Washington on Friday (see video above).
There was progress “in the southern line of advance from the Zaporizhia area”. In addition, Kiev has had some successes against the second Russian line of defense. “That’s not to say they aren’t aware that there are still some heavy fighting ahead as they try to move further south,” Kirby added.
The counteroffensive is progressing slowly
Ukraine has been conducting a counter-offensive since the beginning of the summer, but progress is slow. In recent days, however, the Ukrainian army had been successful in its attacks against the heavily fortified Russian defense lines in the south.
The aim of the Ukrainian troops is to advance to the Sea of Azov, some 80 kilometers away, to cut off the land connection with the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which Russia has annexed.
Moscow reports that it has taken new positions
Russia, in turn, reported taking key positions near the eastern Ukrainian city of Kupjansk. In the direction of Kupjansk, the units “improved their tactical position”, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday.
