A Belarusian bear has apparently had enough of the Belarusian ruler Lukashenko, the crimes of the infamous Wagner mercenary group and Russian dominance in his country. He begins an escape attempt to the EU.
The animal tried to climb over the meter-high border fence with Lithuania and thus enter the EU. However, for the time being the difficult undertaking was not crowned with success. Although bears are good climbers and have claws up to two inches long that dig deep underground, the predator fails.
The border crossing to the neighboring country simply seems too massive for that. Nevertheless, the animal tries with all its might, even takes a run and finally manages to pull itself up to the barbed wire.
Not just animals on the run
The escape attempt was captured by one of the numerous cameras monitoring the border crossing. Since August, more personnel have also been on site to improve the security situation in the country.
Background: Lithuania – like Poland and Latvia – is concerned about the activities of Wagner’s Russian private army in the neighboring country, which is closely linked to Moscow. After the failed uprising against Moscow, their troops camped in Belarus. The situation is also tense because migrants from crisis areas want to travel to Lithuania, which the Belarusian authorities tolerate or even specifically promote in order to create a political pressure tool.
