After a series of gang rapes that shocked the public, the Italian government is working on a new regulation that would allow only adults to access porn platforms. The platforms are only allowed to grant access to users of verified age. This is to ensure that the people accessing the pornographic videos are of legal age.
“We need to hold websites accountable for age certification. They will have to use the services of apps to monitor the application of the law,” Family Minister Eugenia Roccella told Italian media.
Apps are designed to determine age
“The platforms for pornographic material have to turn to apps that specialize exclusively in determining the age of users for a fee. Using documents, artificial intelligence or questionnaires, these apps can determine whether someone accessing a porn video is an adult or a minor,” said Guido Scorza, member of the Italian Data Protection Authority.
“Experts estimate that the average age at which children are first exposed to increasingly violent and extreme pornography is now seven years old. This is not about censorship, but about the protection of minors,” said the minister.
‘Don’t leave families alone’
Access to porn platforms cannot be prevented by self-certification of age. “Objective instruments must be used. Families often feel powerless because pornography is distributed through new technologies that children can use much better than adults. Indeed, there are tools such as parental controls that are very little used and that need to be better known and disseminated. Families should not be left alone,” said the minister.
