Climate activists of the ‘last generation’ protested again in the Tyrolean capital. On Monday there was an action on Innstrasse to draw attention to the increasing soil cover. They demanded advice from the city planners.
In the morning traffic, the “Last Generation” blocked the Innstrasse in Innsbruck. The reason for their protest action is the increasing soil sealing: a pasture orchard must be sealed by the construction of 64 expensive investor apartments. The activists demand that “the negative advice of the city planners and Innsbruck’s draft advisory board be taken into account and that the current plans be stopped.”
Once again the ‘Last Generation’ called for listening to the climate council and promoting renovations. “Given the approval of this construction project, there is obviously no genuine interest in implementing the socially just demands of the citizens’ climate council,” says the last generation.
Action ended quickly
According to the police, the most recent protest in Innsbruck was over quickly. “The activists marched alone on Innstrasse. Traffic disruption was minimal,” said police spokesman Stefan Eder. The approximately fifteen activists are being charged.
‘Recreational spaces more important than profit’
“Green recreational areas should be more important than profit! Our environment can no longer afford this kind of investment,” says activist Helmuth Wachtler, and his colleague Christine Abdel-Halim adds: “It is no longer enough to go to a climate demonstration every now and then and hope that politicians will eventually respond and measures will implement appropriate measures.”
