Unique baby turtle hatched in zoo

Date:

A unique baby animal was born in Switzerland. An albino Galapagos giant tortoise hatched in the Tropiquarium de Servion.

Albino tortoises have never been seen in the wild and one can imagine that Philippe Morel, owner of the Tropiquarium in Switzerland, is now overjoyed that such a unique specimen was born at the beginning of May in his zoo of all places.

You would have been happy to see a “normal” baby turtle. So far, only three zoos in the world have managed to mate the giant tortoises, which can weigh up to 200 kilograms.

Incredible surprise
Just this week, the zoo released the sensation that it was working and that the eggs laid in February have developed in the incubator.

On May 1, the time had come. The first of two babies came out and it was an incredible surprise.

“We were surprised to discover an albino baby among our baby Galapagos giant tortoises, a phenomenon never seen before in zoos or in the wild,” the zoo wrote. The second baby of the genus Chelonoidis nigra, which hatched four days later, is black like its parents.

The turtles, which belong to an endangered species, were born as part of a conservation program. “These are rare and extraordinary births, especially for the albino baby. This is the first time in the world that an albino Galapagos tortoise has been born and kept in captivity,” the zoo said.
