As a replacement, the president of Ukraine has proposed former deputy Rustem Umerov to give the ministry “a new focus”.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said on Sunday that he has fired his defense minister Oleksiy Reznikov and will replace him with Rustem Umerov, who heads the State Property Fund.
In his usual late-night speech, Zelenksi called for a “new approach” to the ministry that Reznikov has led since the Russian invasion in February 2022: “Oleksiy Reznikov has lived through more than 550 days of large-scale war. I think the Ministry needs a new approach and different forms of interaction, both with the military and with society in general.’
During his tenure, Reznikov led negotiations to equip the Ukrainian armed forces with modern weapons from the Allies. He has also been surrounded by controversy for his possible involvement in corruption cases, which he has always denied. Specifically, Reznikov is accused of buying military goods from the ministry at much higher prices.
Zelensky suggested former deputy Rustem Umerov replace Reznikov, noting his efforts against corruption and in war negotiations.
