Italian authorities have launched an investigation into a 56-year-old Italian who fired his pistol on Friday evening at the brown bear “Amarena” (“Black Cherry”) in the Abruzzo National Park, who was traveling with her cubs. After several death threats to him, the man was placed under police protection.
The businessman justified himself by saying that the bear had invaded his property and that in a panic he grabbed the gun.
Italian admits mistakes
“I made a mistake. After meeting the bear, I immediately called the carabinieri,” the man said, according to the media.
Carabinieri are now stationed outside the man’s home after multiple death threats were posted against him on social media.
Find the two brown bear cubs
Rangers and park rangers are now looking for the two cubs of the brown bear, which was named ‘Amarena’. The approximately six-month-old animals cannot feed themselves and could become prey for wild animals because they are not yet able to defend themselves, the park management feared.
traces seen
Traces of the boys have already been observed. So far, however, the bears have not been caught. “Our priority is to find them as soon as possible. These are six month old animals. They are not self-sufficient in finding food and can become prey to packs of stray dogs,” explains the commander of the Avezzano Carabinieri, Luigi Strianese.
The search is not easy, because the boys prefer to be out in the evening or at night, it says. Traps with bait and food were set up to lure them in in an attempt to catch them. Anesthetic cartridges should not yet be used in young animals.
