Social law expert and deputy director of Diakonie Austria, Martin Schenk, paints a moving picture of children who come from households at risk of poverty: “It is embarrassing when you say you are poor – some prefer to keep quiet and be silent. Or they say they have a stomach ache and stay at home.”
Many households lack financial support for the children. The photocopying money and money for school events or walking days are often missing. Parents’ associations could offer some help, but children are often left alone with their problems: ‘If you often can’t participate because of that, you quickly think you don’t belong and feel left out.’
A year of primary school for a child costs parents about 1,400 euros per year, and in the lower classes even 1,700 euros per year: “This applies to money for sports equipment, colored pencils, craft kits – or, on a larger scale, the payment of language stays or ski courses .”
A particular problem would be the cost of private tutoring: “Remedial learning is not enough, but private tutoring is very important for many parents. But not everyone can afford that,” says the social law expert. Help for financially affected parents would be the new addition of the school equalization fund, as there was in Corona times. However, that is currently not in sight.
