Italy groans under the first heat wave of the year: An African high-pressure area, which meteorologists call “Hannibal”, unusual peaks of up to 34 degrees are expected this week for May. The high pressure area is expanding towards Italy, supported by warm air masses.
This special weather situation is typical for the month of July and can cause prolonged heat waves. In mid-May, the average high temperatures in the main Italian cities usually range between 20 and 24 degrees Celsius. The heat wave is expected to peak at the end of the week, with peaks reaching 34 degrees.
Cities such as Turin, Milan and Bologna, but also regions on the Tyrrhenian Sea, such as Tuscany and Lazio, are affected by this heat. The gradually warming air masses within the high-pressure zone will be burdened with high humidity on their way across the Mediterranean from the Sahara to Italy, meteorologists warned.
