At least three people have died in heavy rain in Spain. Three others were still missing Monday night. In the town of Aldea del Fresno, a man in his car was swept away by bodies of water.
His 10-year-old son was rescued from a tree, according to authorities. The boy’s mother and sister, who were also in the car, had been rescued earlier. In the neighboring municipality of Villamanta, a search was underway on Monday evening for an 83-year-old who was “dragged by the current”.
At least seven dead
According to the authorities, the death of three other people has been certain since Monday. The body of a 50-year-old was found near a stream in Toledo province. At least four people were killed over the weekend, including a 20-year-old in a garage elevator and another man in a vehicle. On Saturday, two men, aged 31 and 34, fell into torrential water and drowned while hiking in a gorge in Zaragoza, northeastern Spain.
Large parts of the country were hit by storms this weekend with torrential rain, hurricanes, lightning strikes and hail. Countless houses were flooded, roads and railway lines had to be closed. Authorities in the Madrid region had previously urged residents not to leave their homes. Photos and videos of a flooded subway in Madrid were posted on social networks.
