Pope Francis has sympathy and understanding for the protests of young climate activists. “Young people are worried about their future,” said the head of the Catholic Church on Monday on the flight back from Mongolia. When asked about the sometimes spectacular actions of groups such as the Last Generation, which is also active in Italy, he says he rejects “any form of extremism”.
He can understand young people’s concerns about the climate; after all, they think about their future. “In that sense, I like that they are very involved,” the pope said.
In his remarks, he also referenced the update of his acclaimed 2015 environmental encyclical ‘Laudato Si’, which was published in early October.
One of the goals agreed at the conference was to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees compared to the pre-industrial era. There are things that have not been observed until now — hence the urgency to take action, Francis said.
Laudato Si’ was the Pope’s second encyclical. These writings are an ecclesiastical policy document and one of the most important doctrinal writings of the Catholic Church.
Pope criticizes politics and economics
In “Laudato Si'”, Francis harshly criticized politics and economics. At the time, he called for an “ecological reversal” and more climate protection.
