In French schools – After the abaya ban: Macron wants uniform clothing

Date:

The ban on abayas, long coats worn by some Muslim women, has sparked an intense debate in France over the separation of church and state before school starts. Since 2004, wearing headscarves, yarmulkes and crosses on chains has been banned in schools. Now President Emmanuel Macron is going one step further and calling for uniform clothing for school children.

Speaking to YouTuber Hugo Décrypte on Monday night, Macton said, “Without a uniform you can say you put on a T-shirt, jeans and a jacket. You can have things that are much more acceptable to the youngsters, which is the uniform which is not uniform and which I think is less strict from a disciplinary point of view. It controls a lot of things,” Macron said.

“No one should be excluded because of his clothing”
At the same time, the Minister of Education had announced that school uniforms would be tested in different school types from the autumn. As Macron said Monday evening, he supports a school uniform test. It is about creating peace in the schools, the focus at the school is on community. No one should be stigmatized or excluded because of their clothing.

It is about clothing with a religious reference, but also clothing that is overly eccentric. In the past, there were also discussions in France about wearing crop tops, crop tops.

The Council of State, France’s highest administrative court, is considering whether a ban on abayas in schools is legal at all. An association for the protection of the rights of Muslims (ADM) had filed an urgent application against the ban.
