On Sunday around 9 am, two Dornbirn residents aged 72 and 73 left the Unterfluhalpe on a journey towards Hoher Freschen (Vorarlberg). As road authorities, they wanted to check and restore the condition of the Alpine hiking trail “Binnelgrat”. In the process, disaster struck.
When the 73-year-old arrived at the top of the Hohen Freschen around 1:30 p.m., his companion was on the trail about 50 meters below the summit. The eldest waited at the top for his companion, but when he had not arrived after a quarter of an hour, his mountain friend came to see him.
Missing was found motionless
However, after he couldn’t find his companion anywhere, the man descended towards Binnelhalpe and Unterfluhalpe and notified the rescue center. A search team from the Dornbirn mountain rescue service was taken by helicopter to the top of the Hoher Freschen. There the rescuers could see fresh tracks in a snowfield five meters below the summit. By following the course of the tracks and the direction of the fall, a mountain rescuer was able to find objects and then the missing person motionless.
According to the tracks, the 72-year-old must have slipped on the snowfield without outside influence and crashed through partially vertical terrain towards Mellental, Dornbirn municipality. The man suffered fatal injuries as a result of the fall and eventually had to be rescued by the police helicopter Libelle by means of deaf rescue.
