A helicopter belonging to the Salzburg company Heli Austria crashed in northern Italy. The accident happened on Tuesday evening in the Lombardy mountain region of Valtellina in the Valgerola Valley at 1,700 meters above sea level. According to the fire service, three people were injured. The Swiss pilot was taken to Bergamo hospital in a critical condition.
The 62-year-old is now out of danger, but needs treatment for head injuries and fractures. According to Roy Knaus, general manager of Heli Austria, the Swiss is a very experienced pilot with 11,000 flight hours. The condition of the two Italian flight assistants, who were also on board the helicopter, is not worrying. They are also being treated in hospital.

The cause of the crash is under investigation
The small five-seater Airbus H-125 helicopter had taken off from the mountain town of Livigno on Tuesday and was on its way to Caiolo in the Lombardy province of Sondrio when it crashed in the dark. The salvage work was problematic because the area is difficult to reach by land. The causes of the crash are still under investigation.
