Withdrawal from Robotyne – Kiev speaks of breakthrough, Russians of tactics

Date:

More than a week after the Ukrainian army reported a strategic breakthrough in Russia’s defense line in the southeast of the country, the Russians have now acknowledged their withdrawal from the strategic city of Robotyne. The withdrawal was made for “tactical reasons,” the report said.

There is no point in staying in an open area if there is no possibility for the troops to fully dig into defensive positions, Russian-appointed administrator of the occupied Zaporizhia region Yevgeny Balitsky told media portal RBC. Since the Ukrainian flag was raised in Robotyne on August 24, just in time for Independence Day, Kiev’s troops have made little progress.

Objective: to break the land connection with Crimea
According to the little information available, the fighting should now be centered on the section between Robotyne and the village of Werbowe, a few miles to the east. The first town in the area, Tokmak, is still over 20 kilometers away, not to mention over 80 kilometers to the shore of the Sea of Azov. By advancing to the sea, Kiev hopes to deny Moscow land connections to the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which has been occupied since 2014.

In contrast to the counter-offensive in the south, the Ukrainian army at the front in the east says it is increasingly concentrating on defensive battles against the Russian invading forces. The situation along the eastern front line remains difficult and the main task is to ensure reliable defense and prevent loss of position, Ukrainian ground forces commander Oleksandr Syrskyi told the Telegram short message service.

“The enemy is not abandoning its plans to reach the borders of Donetsk and Luhansk regions,” he said. The main task of the Ukrainian army is to ensure reliable defense, prevent the loss of positions in the Kupyansk and Lymansk directions, and successfully advance and reach the intended positions in the direction of Bakhmut.

Ammunition deliveries from North Korea?
Individual reports from the front speak of a difficult situation for Moscow. According to media reports, Russia is now even trying to obtain weapons and ammunition in talks with the otherwise internationally isolated North Korea – the Kremlin is silent on this. The US believes that North Korea can supply significant amounts of munitions. In recent weeks, state-controlled media in North Korea have reported several times that the ruler has visited arms and munitions factories. He called for a significant increase in domestic production.
