To create a shortcut to a construction site, a man and woman dug a hole in the world-famous Great Wall of China in China’s Shanxi province. The two have caused irreparable damage.
Police in Youyu County posted photos online in late August of the devastated section of the Wall and those believed to be responsible. The 38-year-old and the 55-year-old woman enlarged an existing hole there in order to have a shorter route to a construction site where they worked. According to reports, the ancient section of the wall from the Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644) was destroyed beyond repair in the action in late August.
Police in Youyu, north of Shanxi, arrested the man and woman in a neighboring province. They have confessed to the crime and must now answer for it.
Part of the UNESCO World Heritage
Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Great Wall is one of China’s most recognizable attractions. The defense system consists of several parts that were built and expanded at different times.
The restored parts of the Great Wall, such as those near the Chinese capital Beijing, attract countless tourists from home and abroad every year. The now affected part was among the unrestored parts.
