The Greens and the SPD failed with their application during the special session in the Bavarian state parliament on the anti-Semitic folder affair. Deputy Prime Minister Hubert Aiwanger is allowed to stay on, who has been heavily criticized for “inadequately” coming to terms with his own past.
On Thursday, 19 MPs voted in favor of the motion in the interim committee, 32 against. So there were no abstentions.
The CSU and Free Voters had also previously rejected requests from the Greens, SPD and FDP to question Prime Minister Markus Söder and his deputy Aiwanger about their majority on the committee.
Red-green: Aiwanger damages Bavaria’s reputation
The Greens and the SPD had justified the request for Aiwanger’s resignation by saying his explanation of the allegations surrounding an anti-Semitic leaflet from his school days was “totally inadequate”. His handling of the case makes him intolerable for office, and Aiwanger damages Bavaria’s reputation in the world.
The 52-year-old admitted that copies of an anti-Semitic leaflet were found in his school bag at the age of 16. But he denies being the author. His brother took responsibility for this. Aiwanger recently had to answer in writing Söder’s extensive list of questions about the allegations. Söder then made the decision in early September to keep Aiwanger in office.
Free voters win despite affair in polls
The interim committee in Bavaria is responsible for discussing urgent matters in the period shortly before the state elections and currently has 51 members. The next state elections in Bavaria will take place on October 8. In surveys, the ruling CSU leads with about 38 percent, followed by coalition partner Free Voters with 16 percent.
The right-wing populist AfD is at 14 percent, the Greens at 13 percent.
