This search is likely to annoy the emergency services in East Tyrol: after finding an abandoned paraglider in a tree, they wanted to find the pilot. But he clearly had something completely different in mind…
On Thursday around 2 p.m., witnesses observed how a paraglider near the paragliding launch site “Scheibe” (2,005 meters above sea level, municipality of Obertilliach) got into a spin and got stuck in a tree about 300 meters away. Based on the observation, they made an emergency call.
Drone and then helicopter alerted
After the alarmed emergency services of the Obertilliach mountain rescue service could not find any injured people in the vicinity of the crash site despite a drone, an emergency medical helicopter was also alerted. Meanwhile, at the valley station of the cable car “Golzentipp”, a 63-year-old Pole was noticed by the police with a cut on his leg. However, when questioned, he stated that he sustained the injury while hiking. Therefore, the search for the pilot continued.
Late confession
On the way to the Lienz district hospital, the man finally confessed that he was the paragliding pilot they were looking for, and the search was called off. The man was treated on an outpatient basis at the hospital.
