A Secret Service Agent – Two Germans accused of espionage in Russia

Date:

In Germany, an employee of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) and his alleged accomplice have now been charged with espionage. They are accused of revealing classified information to the Russian secret service FSB. The Secret Service agent was arrested on December 21, 2022.

He was taken into custody. Carsten L. is said to have forwarded information from the BND to Russia after the outbreak of war in Ukraine last year. In concrete terms, according to the federal public prosecutor’s office, it is a state secret. L. is accused of printing or photographing nine internal documents at his workplaces in Berlin and Pullach near Munich in September and October. The data concerns the collection of technical information.

The German Arthur E. is said to have eventually taken the information to Russia and handed it over to the secret service. He was arrested as a suspected accomplice when he entered the US from the US at Munich Airport in January (see video above).

FSB allegedly paid for services
The FSB is said to have paid Carsten L. 450,000 euros and Arthur E. at least 400,000 euros for their services. L. helped E. through customs upon returning to the country. The two had known each other since May 2021 and met a Russian entrepreneur who made contact with the secret service in September last year, it is said. According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, E. subsequently attended several meetings in Moscow.

According to reports in the German media, L. has so far remained silent about the accusations, while E. has fully confessed. The contact person promised himself a permanent residence permit in Germany. It was also said that the FSB had requested information from the suspect about the locations of US missile launchers and details of the German air defense system.

The Berlin Court of Appeal must now decide on a possible trial. This will probably take place largely behind closed doors. Various disciplinary proceedings are currently underway against BND employees for possible violations of service regulations.
