Nuclear power India tested a hypersonic missile for the first time – and then celebrated the ‘milestone’. The missile was launched from an island off the country’s east coast, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday.
“India has achieved a major milestone by successfully conducting a test flight of a long-range hypersonic missile,” he said on X (formerly Twitter). He congratulated the DRDO India team, “our armed forces and industry on great achievements,” Singh wrote (see post below).
Unlike conventional ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles fly at low altitudes, which allows them to reach their targets faster and is less likely to be intercepted by air defense systems. The projectiles are also maneuverable in flight.
Hypersonic missiles have only been tested by the US, Russia, China and North Korea. This was followed by India, which has been massively strengthening and modernizing its armed forces for some time now.
