Despite having an international arrest warrant issued for him, Russian President Vladimir Putin is not at risk of arrest during a possible visit to Brazil, according to his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. “If I am the president of Brazil and if he comes to Brazil, he will certainly not be arrested,” Lula told the Indian news portal Firstpost on Saturday on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi.
“We like peace and like to treat people well. “So I think Putin can travel to Brazil safely,” the Brazilian head of state explained. The next G20 meeting will take place next year in the Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro. Lula announced that he wanted to invite Putin to the summit.
Lavrov represented Putin in New Delhi
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz saw no reason to worry about Puti’s possible participation in the next G20 summit in 2024 in Brazil. What is important now is the summit declaration that Russia could not escape. “That is why there is now speculation as to whether he will come at all or not,” Scholz said. “I don’t want to have to deal with that either.”
Putin did not attend the summit in India and was represented by his Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
International arrest warrant for Putin
The International Criminal Court (ICC), based in The Hague, issued an arrest warrant for Putin last March. The Russian president has avoided international meetings since the start of the war of aggression in Ukraine. Putin also did not attend the summit in India, although the country, unlike Brazil, has never become a member of the ICC.
On Saturday, G20 participants adopted a statement that did not explicitly condemn Moscow for the war in Ukraine. Instead, all countries were urged not to use force to seize territory.
