In light of the recent food scandals, Georg Strasser, chairman of the farmers’ association, is calling for massively increased controls.
“Salmonella in cheap Polish chicken meat for kebab skewers has claimed countless victims in Austria since February,” say Georg Strasser, chairman of the farmers’ association, and the chairman of the Austrian poultry industry, Markus Lukas, about the disgusting scandal (see video above). Together they urge a control offensive with more experts to prevent such incidents in the future.
A “Schnitzel Cobra” is needed, consisting of experienced inspectors. “Unhygienic working methods cannot endanger people’s health. Meat produced under conditions unknown to us in Austria should not end up on our plates. Special attention must now be paid to cleanliness during further processing, storage and sale,” says Strasser. ‘Four Paws’ also requires such a special unity.
Veterinary Medicines Act is important
In light of the approximately 35,000 victims annually across Europe who could no longer be treated successfully due to increasing antibiotic resistance due to meat consumption, the planned new Veterinary Medicines Act is also of particular importance. “The regulations for the use of antibiotics in factory farming are being tightened,” assures green agriculture spokesperson Clemens Stammler.
