In Jena, a choreographer’s dog poop attack on a critic is brought to the stage. The theater announced on Monday that it is a performance about darkness, beauty and forgiveness, based on a true story.
It is a play within a play: it discusses how a collective uses the dog poop attack as the basis for a production. However, during rehearsals, the artists become afraid of getting into trouble with the project and getting into fights with each other. The film is directed by Walter Bart, part of the Dutch collective Wunderbaum. The piece was developed together with an ensemble and will premiere on October 27.
As reported, choreographer Marco Goecke smeared dog poop on a critic in the foyer of the Hanover Opera House in February. He had previously accused the journalist of always writing “bad, personal” reviews. Afterwards, the award-winning artist spoke of an exaggerated reaction, but he and his work were ‘tarnished’ by critic Wiebe Hüster. For example, she described one of his productions as “an embarrassment and impertinence”.
According to his own statement, Goecke had a bag with his dog’s feces with him during the confrontation, which he actually just wanted to throw away. After the attack, police investigated physical injuries and insults. In addition, the Hanover State Theater separated from the artist. According to media reports, we are considering working with him again (see video above).
