Powerful quake – earthquake in North Africa caused the dam wall to shake

Date:

The earthquake in Morocco spread to Lower Austria. The powerful vibrations were also recorded by the sensitive measuring equipment in the EVN dam in Ottenstein.

We quickly recorded the terrible earthquake in Morocco in our Ottenstein and Dobra barriers. Because our measuring instruments are so finely calibrated that they respond within a very short time in the event of such a natural disaster,” say EVN expert Stefan Zach and Ottenstein plant manager Erich Binder. In both dams, these sensitive probes register every major vibration – even at a distance of 1,000 kilometers.

Their main task, however, is to monitor any change in the massive reinforced concrete wall, which must hold back 73 million cubic meters of water and whose dimensions – 69 meters high and up to 24 meters thick – are enormous. Due to the seasons, the energetic stronghold in the heart of the Waldviertel expands slightly in the summer and decreases again in the cold season. Over the weekend, immediately after the first bad news about the distant earthquake, Binder and his experts rushed to the hanging cellars in the dam.

Nothing can upset the power plant manager more
The experienced specialist and Zach quickly managed to give the signal. “Our wall does not show any cracks. If in doubt, I will take a look and carry out a check myself. “The same now,” assures Binder, who in the true sense of the word can no longer be dismayed. The fact that enormous masses of water press against the reinforced concrete wall from outside and supply 20,000 households with green electricity with a soft hum is never noticeable in the depths. But the vigilant EVN team in Ottenstein continues to hold the fort faithfully. And around the clock…
