A 22-year-old man damaged 55 parked cars in a fit of “sadness and despair in society”. The main reason for his anger: his own mother.
The defendant’s mother takes a seat in the rows of spectators in the Vienna court. Time and again she intervenes and wants to give her son instructions. But at some point he has had enough. The 22-year-old begs the judge to send his mother out: “She is the volcano of my rage!”
“The sadness and despair about society” he “feels as an artist” escalated on New Year’s Eve 2022: after an argument with a taxi driver, all he saw was red: He walked down the street in Vienna’s 3rd district and damaged 55 parked vehicles – the damage is more than 20,000 euros. “Artists must not harm anyone, they must please”, judge Claudia Bandion-Ortner admonished.
Early on, the young man chose a difficult path: dropping out of school and wanting to become an artist – that destroyed the relationship with his parents. They sent him to Vienna against his will: “I would have to study, otherwise nothing would come of me.” Since then, the 22-year-old has lived in a tent on the Danube Island.
Because the victims appear to have settled their car damage through the insurance company, the ruling is limited to three months.
