Crime book author Eva Rossmannn took over the sponsorship of three stork babies in the Haringsee owl and bird of prey reserve in Lower Austria. They were christened “Mira”, “Vesna” and “Oskar”. They are the chicks of a very special pair of storks. A story like something out of an animal novel.
It’s something very special – and sounds more like an animal novel by William Shakespeare than a crime novel by Eva Rossmann: Stork “Louis” came injured in 2014 at the owl and raptor station (EGS) Haringsee in the Gänserndorf district, where he was recovering his wounds to cure. There he met the stork lady “Mona”, who can no longer fly after a wing injury and is therefore the permanent protégé of the four-legged station.
Love is stronger than driving
The love between the two was ultimately stronger than the urge to fly south. And so, “Louis” decided to stay with his beloved. In 2015, the couple gave birth to their first young and have had chicks every year since then. An eyrie at a height of about one meter serves as a “love nest”, which “Mona” reaches by means of stairs. If the young storks are strong enough, they will fly to Africa with others.
Young storks should live in a way that suits their species
Also this year there are descendants of the stork couple with “Mira”, “Vesna” and “Oskar”. Rossmann took over the sponsorship of the little ones, naming them after their bestselling protagonists. “Animal and environmental protection is important to me. It’s nice that there are places like the EGS, where respect for nature and living creatures is so important,” says the crime author. Above all, she wishes her new protégés a kind of adapted life.
